FAQ

If you will be a new student starting Summer or Fall 2009 semester, you will not be able to take the Math Placement Exam or schedule for the orientation until April, 2009

Q. What is the Math Placement Exam?

A. The Math Placement Exam is a free test given to new UH students, designed to assess their current Math skills and how those skills translate into the UH Math curriculum.

Q. Why is the Math Placement Exam important to me?

A. All incoming freshmen (including transfer students with less than 30 transferrable hours) are required to take the UH Math Placement Exam before we will allow you to register for Orientation.

Q. How do I pass this requirement?

A. The Math Placement Exam is provided for free online.

First, create a login for the Orientation/Courseware portal. You can take the Math Placement Exam once you are logged in. There are multiple levels to choose from - you can take as many as you like! You get two chances on each level, and your advisor will take the highest score.

The Math Placement Exam takes an hour or less to complete. You should not need to study for this test, as it is meant to determine your actual skill level at the time you take it.

Q. I am TSI Exempt/Compliant/Complete. Do I still have to take the Math Placement exam?

A. Yes. The TSI is a state requirement, but the Math Placement exam is a UH requirement.

We want you to succeed in your studies here at the University, so it is important that we assess your current math skills (regardless of what you may have learned - and forgotten - in the past) to determine which level of math is best suited to you as an individual. Students in the wrong level of math only waste their own time and money!

Q. TEST? You are stressing me out.

A. No need to stress! The Math Placement Exam is only for placement purposes - not credit. We are simply trying to determine which math class will be best for you. As a bonus, you can take it twice, and we will use your highest score.

Q. What about transfer students?

A. Transfer students with 30+ hours of transfer credit are not required to take the Math Placement exam. However, if you choose to take the Math Placement exam, you may do so through the Orientation/Courseware portal.
